Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican government this Tuesday ratified the agreement for a US$20 million loan from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa for the construction of hospitals in Niassa province, northern Mozambique.
The Council of Ministers statement notes that Mozambique and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) signed on April 29 of last year an agreement to finance the construction and equipping of the Mecanhelas and Ngauma district hospitals in Niassa province, for a total of US$20 million.
Lusa reported on August 28, 2024, that BADEA would lend US$20 million to Mozambique, specifically to finance the “One District, One Hospital” initiative.
A month earlier, then-Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi had called for Arab investment in the country, citing agriculture, industry, and energy as examples, specifically challenging the domestic production of batteries for electric vehicles.
“Battery production is also important. The country has significant mineral resources, graphite, for example, in the northern provinces, Cabo Delgado, and now we’re going to start in Niassa. These conditions exist, not only for extraction but also for processing,” said Filipe Nyusi on July 24, 2024, at the Mozambique-Arab Investment Forum.
At the time, Nyusi highlighted the “preponderance” and “growth” of investment from Arab countries on the continent, and specifically in Mozambique, challenging those investors to enter agricultural and industrial production, oil and gas, transport and tourism as key areas for national development.
