Africa-Press – Mozambique. The President of the European Council on Monday congratulated Mozambique on the 50th anniversary of its independence, saying that the European Union (EU) had built a “strong and dynamic partnership” with Maputo.

“In my meeting with President Daniel Chapo, I congratulated Mozambique on its 50 years of independence. It was the first of the last four Portuguese-speaking African countries to become independent, marking the end of the European colonial era,” wrote António Costa on social media.

The President of the European Council and former Prime Minister of Portugal considered that, over the years, “the EU and Mozambique have built a strong and dynamic partnership, based on a shared economic, social and security agenda”.

The EU’s presence in Mozambique in recent years has mainly been expressed through training missions to help the Mozambican military in their attempts to defeat the radical group Al-Shabaab, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda in that region of Africa, and through humanitarian support for displaced people in the Cabo Delgado region, in the north of the country.

Mozambique became independent from Portugal on 25 June, 1975, followed in the same year by Cape Verde (5 July), São Tomé and Príncipe (12 July) and Angola (11 November).

Guinea-Bissau had already unilaterally declared independence, on 24 September, 1973, and Portugal recognised it on 10 September, 1974, months after the revolution that overthrew the Portuguese dictatorship.
