Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique and the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) have signed an agreement for the “direct train connections”, an instrument that will strengthen the circulation of goods, particularly coal, through the Goba border, an official source said on Monday.
“As an immediate impact of the agreement, the Goba railway line will double the daily number of coal trains, from the current two to four, said Mateus Magala, Mozambique’s minister of transport and communications, cited by daily newspaper Notícias.
With the new agreement, the circulation of trains from one country to the other will be made without a mandatory stop at the Goba border crossing, which links Mozambique and Eswatini.
The agreement was signed between railway companies Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique(CFM) and Eswatini Railways.
According to the minister, the volume of coal transported will increase from 3,600 tons to 7,200 tons a day, in an understanding that represents the “completion of the African Free Trade Area.
According to figures from the Mozambican minister, a total of 190,000 tons of cargo from Eswatini was transported last year via the Goba railway, and this year 788,000 tons are expected to be transported.
