Africa-Press – Mozambique. The incursion carried out by a group of Islamist terrorists last Thursday in the Chiúre Velho Administrative post, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, forced the displacement of 11,980 people.

According to Fernando Ticho, the Permanent Secretary of Chiúre District, speaking to reporters on Sunday during a visit by Cabo Delgado provincial governor Valige Tauabo to the centres for displaced people, the authorities started counting the number of the displaced on Saturday.

Ticho claimed that the situation is already under control and the authorities are making the necessary efforts to provide basic food supplies to minimize hunger among the displaced.

However, according to the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, citing local sources, some terrorists are continue to circulate in parts of Chiúre district.

In addition to Chiúre-Velho, where they have remained since Thursday, locals reported seeing armed men on Sunday afternoon in villages in the Ocua administrative post.

As a result, many families abandoned their villages on Sunday and took refuge in the Chiúre district headquarters.

According to reports from witnesses and local authorities, the terrorists set fire to the health facility, a police station and a vehicle.

A source from a humanitarian organization told the paper that as of Friday, around 5,000 households had been welcomed at the Namissir accommodation centre, in Chiúre town. However, they have no humanitarian support, especially food and medical assistance.

The Islamic State terrorist network, through its news agency Amaq News has claimed responsibility for the attack.
