Africa-Press – Mozambique. Six days after the Frelimo party spokesperson said there was still no date set for the holding of the electoral session of the party’s Central Committee, the head of the parliamentary bench of the party in power has confirmed that the event will take place next month (March).
The confirmation came from Sérgio Pantie, speaking at the opening of the IX and penultimate ordinary session of the Assembly of the Republic, which began in Maputo this Thursday (22-02).
“In preparation for our victory in October, the Central Committee Session will take place in March. Among several points on the agenda, it will reflect on the party’s strategy for victory,” revealed Pantie, who is a non-voting member of the Frelimo Political Commission.
Pantie’s statement comes amidst a deafening silence on the part of the Frelimo Political Commission regarding the potential successor to Filipe Jacinto Nyusi at the Ponta Vermelha Palace. The party’s highest body met on Thursday last week during the break between the Central Committee sessions, but was once again silent on the issue.
Without touching on the matter of succession, Pantie stated that the session in March, “will make important decisions that will guide the action of party bodies, at different levels, of party activists and supporters in the preparation and participation in the elections general and provincial assemblies”.
José Pacheco, Basílio Monteiro, Alberto Vaquina, Luísa Diogo, Celso Correia, Aires Bonifácio Ali and Amélia Muendane are among those rumoured behind the scenes as having an ambition to dislodge Filipe Jacinto Nyusi from the throne. However, none of them have gone public to confirm the claims.
The presidential elections will take place on October 9, 2024.
