Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has revealed that child mortality in the country fell from 201 to 60 deaths per thousand live births between 1997 and 2022, which means that there was significant progress in the maternal and child health system.
According to the President – who was speaking on Tuesday, in Maputo, during the launch of the Innovation and Action Forum for Immunization and Survival 2025 – among various actions implemented by the government, there is the “One district, one hospital” initiative, the training of professionals in the paediatric medicine, the consolidation of the approach to childhood diseases, and the introduction of new vaccines for the sector to combat child mortality.
“Every child has the right to grow up healthy. That’s why the government has been involved in strengthening the national vaccination programme, with vaccine boosters and intensified actions aimed at the well-being of minors. This is also because vaccination is fundamental to preventing diseases and lowering treatment costs”, Chapo said.
According to Chapo, despite progress in the fight against child mortality, Africa still has the highest number of deaths of children under five years of age, and therefore the meeting between political decision-makers and experts in Maputo is vital in reducing child mortality.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) most African countries, including Mozambique, will not reach target 3.2 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) regarding the reduction of child mortality. Target 3.2 of the SDGs is aimed at preventing deaths of newborns and children under five years of age by 2030 It involves reducing neonatal mortality (deaths of infants under 28 days) and under-five mortality (deaths of children under five years old).
The current event, which is being held for the first time in Africa, was organized by the governments of Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Spain, as well as international and multilateral partners.
The meeting, which brings together political decision-makers, experts and potential partners, is aimed at discussing the main strategies and challenges for accelerating the reduction of child mortality in the world in general and in developing countries in particular.
