Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican Secretary of State for the Sea and Fisheries, Momade Juízo, has warned that illegal fishing and the destruction of mangroves are the main factors threatening the country’s biodiversity.

According to Juizo, who was speaking on Sunday during the central ceremonies marking World Oceans Day”, under the slogan “Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean and Climate”, the proliferation of plastic waste is also a major threat to the oceans “and the government has been looking for a way to stop it.”

“There is a need to strengthen efforts aimed at conserving the oceans in the face of countless dangers that threaten the ecosystem, the development of the blue economy and human survival”, he said.

Juizo claimed that the government is committed to finding solutions to ensure the maximization of the multiple benefits that the oceans offer, within the framework of regional and international commitments on sustainable development.

“Reforms are currently underway at sector level, aimed at strengthening the political, legal and institutional framework for improving the management of the sea and increasing individual and collective responsibility for protecting the approximately 2,700 kilometers of our coastline”, he said.

During the ceremony, Momade Juizo also presented the results of the Blue Economy Satellite Account and the Proposal for the National Strategy and Action Plan for Expanding the Network of Marine Conservation Areas, which are “national instruments symbolizing the national commitment to the economic development of the Oceans.”
