Africa-Press – Mozambique. Portuguese ambassador António Costa Moura has been visiting the province of Nampula since Monday (04-04), and has met district authorities of the Island of Mozambique to learn about the significant damage caused by Cyclone Gombe in Nampula and Zambézia provinces.

According to available data, the cyclone directly affected the lives of 700,000 people, causing significant damage to housing, agricultural production and infrastructure, and claiming more than 60 lives.

To support the victims of the cyclone, Portugal will immediately provide €125,000 to fund humanitarian interventions by NGOs in the province. Approved projects should be announced by April 13.

Additional support will also be provided for the rehabilitation of infrastructure on the Island of Mozambique, in cooperation with Mozambican authorities and partners involved in the third phase of the Portuguese Cooperation Cluster on the Island of Mozambique (2022-2026).

Ambassador Moura, who is visiting Nampula for the first time since being appointed Portuguese ambassador to Mozambique last year, on Monday participated in a seminar called “The City of Macúti: Thinking about the Future – Heritage and Development”.

The seminar, held on the Island of Mozambique, was also attended by Mozambique’s Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, Fredson Bacar, and the UNESCO country representative.
