Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican Police (PRM) has revealed that a businessman of Asian origin, Muhammad Mayet, who was kidnapped, on Wednesday last week, in broad daylight, in central Maputo, has escaped from captivity in the southern Municipality of Matola

The kidnapping occurred on 26 June, at around 08.00, on the corner between Guerra Popular and Ho Chi Minh Avenues. This is about a kilometer from the Interior Ministry and from the Maputo City Police Command.

According to Police spokesperson in Maputo city, Leonel Muchina, cited in Thursday’s issue of the independent daily “O País”, Mayet, who owns a shop selling stationery and school material, escaped when agents of the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) agents surrounded the place where he was held prisoner in the Matola neighbourhood of Malhampsene. Mayet took the opportunity to escape when the kidnappers themselves were running away after realizing that he police were nearby.

According to Muchina, after escaping from captivity, the businessman joined his family.

“The victim is already with his family in good health. And because it’s a crime under investigation, we reserve the right not to say too much about it”, he added.
