Africa-Press – Mozambique. A 38-year-old man is being held at the 1st Police Station of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in the city of Quelimane, accused of stealing and switching debit cards at commercial banks.
The suspect is said to have defrauded 19 victims to the tune of 191,000 meticais.
The spokesperson for the PRM Provincial Command in Zambézia, Belarmina Henriques, explained that a bottle of traditional medicine was also found at the time of the arrest.
One of the victims explained that one of the accused’s accomplices, now detained, had switched his bank card in a moment of distraction, a fact he only discovered when the ATM operation failed and the machine withheld his card.
He then called security guards, who managed to neutralize one of the scammers.
In turn, the suspect stated that he was from Maputo province, and that this was the first time he had perpetrated this crime, by which he had profited by about 20,000 meticais.
