President Urges SENAMI to Embrace New Technologies

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo this Wednesday urged the National Migration Service (SENAMI) to use new technologies and ongoing training in the fight against illegal immigration.

Speaking in Maputo on the occasion of SENAMI’s 50th anniversary, Chapo asked the body to “intensify migration control and the fight against illegal immigration at border crossings, using modern technologies and ongoing training for members of the paramilitary force”.

Daniel Chapo challenged the institution to strengthen the control on entries and exits at the country’s borders and the monitoring of the stay of foreign citizens in Mozambique, in “strict compliance with the law”.

Mozambique, which shares extensive and porous borders with six Southern African countries – Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Eswatini – faces significant challenges in controlling unauthorized entry.

The Mozambican head of state also called for a “vigorous” fight against corruption within SENAMI and the promotion of “ethical, deontological, moral values, and transparency at all levels of activity”.

“Eliminate illicit intermediation in obtaining migration documents. Citizens must deal directly with SENAMI, and there can be no intermediaries in this service. This way, we will guarantee straightforward, accessible, and fair processes for all immigration service users,” he stated.

The President of Mozambique instructed SENAMI to develop an effective strategy to map areas with the highest concentration of foreign citizens, aiming for more integrated and preventative management.

Furthermore, Chapo requested coordination with the Civil Identification Services nd the Registry and Notary Services to improve coordination measures that ensure that Mozambican documents are issued only to those who are legally eligible.
