Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican government plans to expand national grid electricity supply to around 100 more administrative posts by 2024 and, through the construction of the Mphanda Nkuwa dam, to also provide more electricity to neighbouring countries.
The country looks forward to counting on United Kingdom investment in these ambitious projects.
Such was the picture presented to UK investors with interests in Africa in London this Tuesday by Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Zacarias, after a meeting with the UK Secretary of State for International Trade, Anne-Marie Trevelyan.
Speaking to both Mozambique and UK parties, Minister Zacarias described the project to electrify the headquarters of administrative posts as at an advanced stage, but needing support to be successfully concluded.
“To this end, we count on the cooperation of several partners, with special emphasis on the United Kingdom, which has played a crucial role in the materialization of these and other electrification projects through the initiative to promote Renewable Energy Auctions (PROLER,)” the minister detailed.
British investors are participating directly in financing the Temane Power Station project, which will produce 450 megawatts of energy based on natural gas, the minister noted. “We want to take advantage of this occasion to invite other companies from Great Britain to participate and invest in the construction of the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Power Station, which provides for the generation of 1500 Megawatts of energy, the materialization of which will allow an increase in electricity generation capacity and will also allow for the capture of export earnings, as a large part of this energy can go to neighbouring countries like South Africa,” Zacharias added.
The war between Ukraine and Russia, which has plagued Europe since February this year, is, for Mozambique, an opportunity to accumulate foreign currency, according to Carlos Zacarias. “The levels of gas reserves that we have allow us to design projects that will respond to the demand of Europe and other countries worldwide,” he said.
UK investors acknowledged that the invitation to invest in energy was timely. “We believe that the minister’s call for foreign investment is appropriate and timely. I also believe that it is an achievable goal, if all those involved really promote transparency. We are delighted to continue as partners with Mozambique,” Sean Gilbertson said on behalf of British investors.
The bilateral meeting, involving the governments of Mozambique and England as well as the private sector of both countries, took place within the scope of the ‘Mozambique in the UK Week’, which is presenting business opportunities in London and Glasgow from Monday to Thursday of this week.
