Africa-Press – Mozambique. In the administrative post of Pundanhar, Palma district, in Cabo Delgado, conflict between man and wildlife is setting back efforts to restore the lives of families who have returned to their villages of origin, which they had abandoned due to terrorist attacks.
As a result of the wild animals’ behaviour, the families have, two years after their return, still not managed to become self-sufficient in of food, since the monkeys and wild pigs are wrecking their attempts to practise agriculture.
According to the head of the administrative post of Pundanhar, Vicente Passe, the problem is so great that there is little possibility of a harvest, as a result of which nearly 4,000 inhabitants are experiencing food insufficiency and require urgent assistance.
No in-depth study has been carried out, but local authorities believe that there was a significant increase in the number of monkeys and wild pigs locally when the population left Pundanhar in search of safety in other parts of the province.
Locally, there is still no solution to the problem of human-wildlife conflict, but responses are said to be under consideration.
