Montepuez Ruby Mining and ANAC renew agreement to support Quirimbas National Park

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) and the National Conservation Areas Administration (ANAC) have just renewed their partnership to support the Quirimbas National Park (PNQ), in Cabo Delgado province, in the northern region of the country.

The agreement aims to implement and carry out activities related to the conservation of biodiversity and the well-being of communities residing in the buffer zone of the Quirimbas National Park.

As part of the partnership signed between the parties, Montepuez Ruby Mining reaffirmed its commitment to support PNQ, which started in 2018, and will now disburse another US$150,000 for a period of three years (2021-2023), to be made available in three tranches of US$50,000 each, until the year 2023.

Funds will be earmarked for protection, supervision, administration, finance, human resources and community development projects.

The previous agreement, which ran from 2018 to 2020, provided the same level of support.

“We are proud of the progress and results achieved by this partnership to date and are delighted to continue for the next three years,” said Lucas Sete, MRM Senior Community Liaison Officer.

The Quirimbas National Park was established in 2002. Its 7,500 km2 area – of which 80% is made up of islands – was recently designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

The park encompasses marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Its list of protected marine and terrestrial species include the turtle, the dugong, the whale, the shark and the elephant. (The area is crossed by three elephant migration routes.)

It also has lions, leopards, buffaloes, wild boars, sables, birds (including eagles and flamingos) and mangrove fish.
