Mozambique: 50-year-old woman dies in Mogovolas, “presumably of hunger”

Africa-Press – Mozambique. A woman about fifty years old died last week in Mogovolas district, Nampula province, in northern Mozambique, with hunger cited as the probable cause of death.

So said Nampula police spokesperson Zacarias Nacute, during the regular weekly update on the operational work of the corporation covering the week of 29-10-21 to 04-11-21.

Nacute did not give the victim’s identity or place of residence, because, he said, the information he had received from his colleagues in Mogovolas did not contain these details.

“During the week in question we had a case of a lifeless body. She was a 50-year-old citizen, and after undergoing post-mortem examination it was assumed that she lost her life due to natural causes, particularly because of hunger,” Nacute said.

When asked whether the woman lived alone or not, Nacute replied that “at the time this report was prepared, the only information that the police had was that the woman was alone in the place, her residence, where she ended up losing her life on account of hunger”.

“There were no other details about the case, because after becoming aware of the matter, the police removed the body to the morgue so that the body could be preserved until someone responsible is found, or other actions, properly directed through the local hospital, can be taken.”

“Whenever there are dead bodies, the PRM team is accompanied by members of SERNIC and forensics, where immediately a preliminary examination is carried out, hence [in this case] it is assumed that she lost her life due to hunger,” Nacute reiterated.

When asked by journalists whether Mogovolas has registered other similar pockets of hunger, Nacute was cautious, saying that “the police deal more with issues of public order and security. This is an issue that was provided to us by the coroners, because the police are not trained to determine the [cause of] death. There are competent teams for this, they were the ones who determined that she presumably lost her life due to hunger and that’s what we write in our reports – because experts in the field informed us. Now, as for other issues, I am not qualified to say”.

Other incidents from last week

During the week in question, forty-two (42) individuals were detained for their involvement in various criminal acts in the province.

“As for the police response to the incursion of criminals in our province, 42 individuals were arrested, of whom eight were involved in crimes recorded at the level of the week and the rest in the various operations carried out by force, where we can highlight three citizens who were found in the area of the Fourth Police Station (in the city of Nampula) with various goods of questionable provenance and a citizen in the province of Rapale who was seized in possession of a counterfeit thousand meticais bill (1000.00MT). Of the recovered goods, we highlight a motorbike, a computer and two televisions, and various foodstuffs and clothing,” Nacute detailed.

“In compliance with the operative plan aimed at ensuring public order and tranquillity in various areas, including public security itself, criminal investigation and the movement of foreigners in our province, 674 citizens were approached, including nine citizens of various foreign nationalities,” Nacute said.

Nacute also reported the death of a citizen from a crocodile attack in the district of Malema, as well as the death by drowning a six-year-old child in the district of Nacala-a-velha.

In Nampula last week, two road accidents were recorded, in the districts of Nampula and Nacarôa. One involved a pedestrian being run over, and the other the collision of a vehicle with a fixed obstacle. Mechanical failure and excessive speed are indicated respectively as the cause of accidents.
