Mozambique and Namibia agree to set up economic commission

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo announced on Monday in Maputo that Mozambique and Namibia have decided to set up a joint economic commission to boost their relationship.

After a meeting with his Namibian counterpart, Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah, who is on an official visit to the country, Chapo said “We reached the conclusion that the diplomatic and political relations between Namibia and Mozambique are excellent. However, we need to tighten still further the economic diplomacy between the two countries”.

Chapo noted that both countries are rich in mineral resources, and can cooperate in such areas as renewable energies, agriculture, tourism, ports and air transport. In an initial phase, airlines could link the two capitals, Maputo and Windhoek.

“We have already spoken and written, but now we must go into action”, said Chapo. “So we shall organise a business forum between the two countries, at which Mozambican and Namibian businesses can meet”.

Also on Monday, Nandi Ndaitwah visited the Maputo Thermal Power Station (CTM) where she was briefed on the projects under way based on Mozambican natural gas.

The CTM is a combined cycle gas fired power station, with the capacity to produce 106 megawatts of electricity. It uses 15,000 gigajoules of gas per day. The Namibian President was impressed enough to declare that she would like to see a similar undertaking built in Namibia.

She noted that in the past leaders of the southern African region had worked together to obtain independence. This was a solid basis on which the current generation could build to overcome today’s challenges and achieve economic independence.

“If we do not collaborate and work together we shall fall behind and we shall never win economic independence”, she warned.
