Africa-Press – Mozambique. Following Mozambique’s participation at COP26, which took place earlier in November, the Belgian Cooperation together with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands organised a Climate Youth workshop in the Orange Corners in Maputo. The aim of the event, which was held on November 24th, was to raise awareness and discuss climate change with Mozambican youth.

Over 60 participants, attending physically in Maputo and virtually from across the country, discussed how climate change is already having an impact on Mozambique and what the country can do to address its climate challenges.

Coming from different disciplines including agriculture, engineering, forestry and public administration, the participants came up with specific climate solutions and discussed the role of education in enabling the transition to climate resilience.

Participants were eager to transform their ideas into concrete projects and identified the need to learn about project structuring and climate finance to have a real impact.

The session was attended by Maarten Rusch, Head of Cooperation and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Mozambique and Séverine de Potter de ten Broeck, Head of the Belgian diplomatic office in Maputo. In her closing remarks, Mrs. de Potter de ten Broeck highlighted the climate challenges that lie ahead for Mozambique and stressed the important role of youth in Mozambique’s climate future. A new five-year program is expected for the country, in which climate change could be a central element.
