Africa-Press – Mozambique. Administration of the first dose of vaccine against the Covid-19 respiratory disease, under the third phase of the national vaccination campaign, ended on Tuesday, and by then almost three million people had been fully vaccinated.

According to a Wednesday press release from the Ministry of Health, 141,418 people were vaccinated on the last day of this phase. 2,971,969 people are now fully vaccinated, and 5,919,277 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The target groups for this phase were anyone in the rural areas aged 50 and above, and urban dwellers aged between 30 and 49 who had not been previously vaccinated. The next step will be to ensure that all those vaccinated in this phase will receive a second shot.

The Ministry announced that, since the start of the pandemic, 952,514 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,677 of them in the previous 24 hours. 1,668 of these tests gave negative results, while nine people – six men and three women – tested positive for the virus.

Four of the new cases were from the central province of Manica, with one each from Maputo city, Maputo province, Gaza, Inhambane and Nampula.

The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) on Wednesday was 0.54 per cent. This compares with rates of 1.47 per cent on Tuesday, 0.8 per cent on Monday, and 0.9 per cent on Sunday.

Over the same 24 hour period, three Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital, all of them in Maputo city, and one new case was admitted, in Sofala. The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment facilities fell from eight on Tuesday to six on Wednesday. Two of these patients were in Maputo, and the other four were in Matola, Inhambane, Sofala and Zambezia.

The Ministry added that on Wednesday four people were declared fully recovered from Covid-19, all of them in Niassa. The total number of recoveries now stands at 149,407, or 98.6 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

No deaths from the disease were recorded on Wednesday, and so Mozambique’s Covid-19 death toll still stands at 1,936.

The number of active Covid-19 cases rose from 114 on Tuesday to 119 on Wednesday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Cabo Delgado, 32; Nampula, 28; Maputo city, 14; Gaza, 12; Manica, nine; Tete, five; Inhambane, five; Niassa, five; Zambezia, three; Sofala three; and Maputo province, three.
