Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican health authorities reported on Wednesday that 206 people were diagnosed with the Covid-19 respiratory disease that day – the first time that the number of new cases in a single 24 hour period has risen above 200 since 14 September.

According to a Wednesday press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 991,897 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 2,468 of them in the previous 24 hours.

2,262 of the tests yielded negative results. Of the 206 positive cases, 120 were women and 86 were men. As has been the pattern so far this month, the vast majority of the new cases – 91.7 per cent – were from the far south, 150 from Maputo city and 39 from Maputo province. There were also seven cases from Inhambane, three from Gaza, two each from Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Manica, and one from Tete. No positive cases were reported from Sofala, Zambezia or Niassa.

The positivity rate (the percentage of those tested who are positive for the virus) was 8.35 per cent on Wednesday. This compares with 6.49 per cent on Tuesday, 9.31 per cent on Monday and 3.75 per cent on Sunday. These figures are national averages – the positivity rate is much higher in Maputo city (14.01 per cent on Wednesday),

Over the same 24 hour period, seven Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (six in Maputo and one in Inhambane) while five new cases were admitted, all in Maputo. The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment facilities fell from 10 on Tuesday to eight on Wednesday – six in Maputo and two in Inhambane.

Wednesday was the fourth consecutive day on which no Covid-19 deaths were reported. The Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique thus remains 1,941.

Eight people were declared to have made a full recovery from Covid-19, all of them in Gaza. The total number of recoveries now stands at 149,583, or 98.3 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

The number of active Covid-19 cases rose from 600 on Tuesday to 798 on Wednesday. The geographical breakdown of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 458 (57.4 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 200; Inhambane, 45; Cabo Delgado, 28; Zambezia, 18; Gaza, 12; Nampula, 10; Manica, 10; Niassa, six; Tete, six; and Sofala, five.

The Ministry release also reported that, in the previous 24 hours, a further 79,881 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease now stands at 4,379,471, and 6,862,839 have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
