Mozambique Covid-19: Number of active cases slowly drops – AIM

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The number of active cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease in Mozambique continues to decline slowly as the number of recoveries from the disease outstrips the number of new cases.

According to a Sunday press release from the Ministry of Health, in the previous 24 hours there were 2,618 full recoveries from Covid-19 (1,192 in Manica, 464 in Maputo province, 391 in Inhambane, 221 in Zambezia, 201 in Gaza, and 149 in Cabo Delgado).

The total number of recoveries now stands at 202,160, which is 90.8 per cent of all those ever diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique.

Since the start of the pandemic, 1,205,626 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,603 of them in the previous 24 hours. 1,422 of these tests yielded negative results, while 181 people tested positive for the virus. This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 222,596.

Of the new cases identified on Sunday, 96 were women and 85 were men. 19 were under the age of 15. The largest numbers of new cases were in Maputo city (75 – 41.4 per cent), and Inhambane (57 – 31.5 per cent). There were also 10 cases in Nampula, nine in Niassa, nine in Maputo province, eight in Tete, seven in Sofala, three in Gaza, two in Manica, and one in Zambezia. No positive cases were reported from Cabo Delgado.

The positivity rate (the percentage of those tested found to be infected with the virus) continued its slow fall – from 12.63 per cent on Friday, to 11.66 per cent on Saturday, and 11.29 per cent on Sunday.

Over the same 24 hour period, 14 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (eight in Maputo, two in Matola, two in Manica, one in Niassa and one in Inhambane), while 12 new cases were admitted (five in Maputo, four in Niassa, and one each in Tete, Manica and Sofala).

The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment centres fell from 127 on Friday to 110 on Saturday and to 103 on Sunday. 46 of these patients (44.7 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also 10 patients in Niassa, 10 in Nampula, eight in Manica, eight in Gaza, seven in Inhambane, four in Zambezia, three in Cabo Delgado, three in Sofala, two in Matola and two in Tete.

The Ministry reported a further four deaths from Covid-19. These victims were three men and one woman, aged between 10 and 102. Two died in Maputo city, one in Sofala and one in Tete. This brings the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2,157.

The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 21,519 on Friday, to 20,716 on Saturday, and to 18,275 on Sunday.

The geographical break down of the active cases was as follows: Maputo province, 6,574 (36 per cent of the total); Maputo city, 5,614; Niassa, 1,610; Inhambane, 1,192; Zambezia, 1,066; Gaza, 755; Tete, 609; Cabo Delgado, 398; Manica, 245; Nampula, 127; and Sofala, 85.

The release also reported that in the previous 24 hours, a further 13,374 people were vaccinated against Covid-19. This brings the number of people fully vaccinated against the disease to 9,022,900. This is 59.3 per cent of all the eligible population (all people aged 18 and above).

In addition, 1,420 people have received booster shots of the Covid-19 vaccine.
