Africa-Press – Mozambique. Two people have appeared in court in Witbank in South Africa charged with smuggling over 1.5 million rands (about 102,000 US dollars) worth of the illegal drug methamphetamine (crystal meth) from Mozambique.

According to a spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Colonel Katlego Mogale, the two were apprehended during what she described as an “intelligence-driven operation” whilst travelling in a truck heading towards Gauteng province.

She added that “police received information about the truck that was transporting drugs from Mozambique to Gauteng province”.

During a search of the vehicle, thirty four containers were found with each containing a kilogram of crystal meth.

Efforts to halt the trade in illegal drugs have continued to pay dividends. In two separate operations in June, Mozambican authorities seized trucks transporting crystal meth, one carrying 309 kilograms of the drug and the other 55 kilograms. It is speculated that the drugs were produced in Asia and smuggled into Mozambique through the long coastline in Nampula province for onward transportation to South Africa.

South African press reports dd not give the names or nationalities of the two alleged smugglers.
