Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique discards about 116,000 tonnes of plastic annually without proper treatment, damaging public health and biodiversity.
According to Momade Juízo, Secretary of State for the Sea and Fisheries, who was speaking on Thursday, in Maputo, during a ceremony marking World Environment Day, which took place under the slogan “Avoid plastic pollution, preserve the environment”, the improper disposal of plastics in the soil, rivers and oceans is endangering biodiversity.
He explained that plastics cause saturation and exhaustion of landfills. “It is important that we should all be active environmental players, fighting to preserve ecosystems and guarantee a better life for our planet. Ridding the planet of plastic pollution is an important contribution to conserving and using the oceans, seas and marine resources in a sustainable way”, he added.
According to Juízo, the government has created conditions for waste management within the framework of its programme on sustainable waste management, which was recently implemented with the participation of national and international partners.
“All active environmental players must continue fighting for the preservation of ecosystems, guaranteeing a better life for our environment, which, due to the country’s vulnerability to climate change, has been witnessing cyclones and floods as a result of this situation”, he said.
