Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries (MAAP) announced this Tuesday (20-05) that Mozambique produces 500 tons of honey per year, and aims to expand sales to the international market.
Carla Manjate, a beekeeping technician at the Ministry, who was speaking as part of the celebrations of World Bee Day, which took place under the motto “Bee Inspired by Nature to Nourish Us All”, said that Mozambique was on a good track in terms of beekeeping, with 7,000 people currently involved in the area.
“Our beekeepers are most interested in exporting our honey abroad,” said Clara Manjate, stressing that the sector’s biggest challenge is the lack of an accredited laboratory that can help identify the honey.
“We are currently working to identify these laboratories, because the important thing is to have the parameters and encourage our laboratories to carry out the work of analyzing the quality of our honey and its identity here in the country,” she explained.
Manjate noted that MAAP was investing in technical training in the sector and designing a plan that will ensure that Mozambican honey is of the highest quality.
