Mozambique Rebuilds 104 Health Units After Cyclones

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican government will this year rebuild and equip at least 104 health units affected by the cyclones in the provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado in the past rainy season.

“As part of the expansion and equipping of the health network, we will complete construction work on the district hospitals of Mocímboa da Praia, Mueda, Meconta, Mopeia this year, as well as the reconstruction of 104 health units in the provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado affected by Cyclones Jude, Chido and Dikeledi,” Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levi said in parliament yesterday.

Government figures indicate that, of the 104 units identified, 70 are in the province of Nampula and the remaining 34 are in Cabo Delgado, in the north of Mozambique.

“The main benefit will be a reduction in the distance that people have to travel to reach a health unit. The current ratio in our country is 11.5 kilometres; the WHO recommends eight kilometres and with these interventions, Mozambique will have to travel less than 10 kilometres for a resident to reach a health unit,” Minister of Health Ussene Isse said, who is also in parliament answering questions from MPs.

Mozambique is at the end of the rainy season, which runs from October to April, a period in which, in addition to Jude, the most recent, in March, Cyclones Chido, on 14 December, and Dikeledi, on 13 January, caused around 175 of the 300 deaths for the entire rainy season, as well as leaving a trail of destruction.

Mozambique is considered one of the territories most severely affected by global climate change, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season as well as prolonged periods of severe drought.
