Mozambique: Ruling party starts preparations for 12th Congress

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Frelimo, the political party in power in Mozambique, has started preparations for the 12th congress, scheduled for September 23-28, 2022, in the city of Matola, Maputo province, Political Commission member Verónica Macamo said on Thursday.

Macamo was speaking in Maputo on Wednesday at a meeting with all Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) governing bodies in the capital, the Mozambican Information Agency (AIM) reports.

“I came here to hear from the comrades what they consider important issues to be considered by our congress,” she declared.

Verónica Macamo, who is minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in the current government, said that terrorism in Cabo Delgado province would be on the congress agenda.

“Terrorism is now on the defensive, and this gives us hope and inspires confidence in the future. Cabo Delgado is improving a lot,” Macamo said.

She said that the bravery of the Defence and Security Forces, with the support of military personnel from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Rwanda, had secured the recovery of areas that had been occupied by armed groups in the province, creating conditions for the return of former residents.

The head of Mozambican diplomacy also pointed out that the government was working hard to rebuild the province.

Instability in the centre of the country, led by the ‘Military Junta’ Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) splinter group, the Covid-19 pandemic, corruption and unemployment would also be topics for the party delegates, as would lack of housing, particularly for young people, and domestic violence.

Although the current President of the Republic and of the ruling party, Filipe Nyusi, is not mentioned, the 12th congress precedes polling in local elections in 2023 and in general elections in 2024, with political parties approaching the choice of candidates. President Nyusi is serving his second term and is constitutionally barred from running for a third term.

The Congress is Frelimo’s highest decision-making body, and the next meeting will coincide with the 60th anniversary of the founding of Frelimo, the political party in power in Mozambique since the proclamation of national independence in 1975.
