Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s National Road Administration (ANE) has decided to ban the transport of logs at night as part of measures to bolster road safety, it announced in a statement distributed to the media.
“Vehicles transporting abnormal logs cannot operate on roads, park on roadsides or park in protected areas between 6 pm and 5 am,” the statement said.
The National Roads Administration said that the measure would bolster road safety when road accidents are one of the main concerns of the authorities.
“There is a continued violation of the obligations set by law in road transport of cargo and use of the roads,” the ANE statement said.
On average, according to official data, the country records at least 1,000 deaths from road accidents a year. 2020 was an exception, considering that 855 fatalities were recorded, a decrease associated with reduced mobility due to the restrictions imposed by Covid-19.
Despite the 2020 fatality reduction, this year was marked with the worst tragedy ever, when 32 people died, and another 28 were injured in an accident involving two trucks and a bus in Manhiça on 3 July.
After the tragedy, the Mozambican government declared three days of mourning and announced an enquiry into the accident.
Despite the measures, the country continued to register accidents involving passenger carriers, emphasising the accident that occurred earlier this month also in Manhiça, when a jeep collided head-on with a minibus, resulting in the death of 18 people.
