Mozambique: Woman dies in elephants’ attack in Metuchira, Nhamatanda – RM report

Africa-PressMozambique. A 65-year-old woman died in the village of Metuchira, Nhamatanda district, Sofala, last week, after being attacked by a herd of elephants that had escaped from Gorongosa National Park.

The woman was asleep inside her home when the elephants surprised her, dragging her outside. Two grandchildren, who were with her at the time, escaped.

In addition to causing the woman’s death, the animals also almost completely destroyed her home.

Manuença Maibeque, a ranger with Gorongosa National Park, acknowledged that deficient fencing of the conservation area allowed elephants and other animals to invade residential areas.

He did however give assurances that actions to resolve the problem were underway.
