Africa-Press – Mozambique. Approximately 2,300 drug users were admitted to the Nampula Psychiatric Hospital in the first half of this year, compared to 474 in the same period last year.
These are people, mostly young adolescents, who, for various reasons, resort to psychoactive substances, ostensibly to improve their psychological state.
The director of the Provincial Office for Drug Prevention and Control in Nampula, Isabel Alberto, notes that these same young adolescents often lure children into the world of drug use, jeopardizing their future, too.
“This number is frightening to us. In just one semester, we’re talking about adolescents and young adults, who represent the largest number of users, and sometimes children are drawn into this drug use trap,” Isabel Alberto said.
“It’s a worrying situation, and if these are the people who make these choices today, to drink alcohol excessively and use other types of drugs, we’re saying that tomorrow we’ll have these same young adults with mental health issues who won’t be able to embrace the country’s challenges,” she summarised.
