Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambican Attorney-General Beatriz Buchili has appointed Ana Sheila Marrengula as the new director of the Central Office for the Recovery of Assets (GCRA).
Marrengula shot to prominence during the 2021-2022 trial of 19 people implicated in the scandal of Mozambique’s hidden debts. She was the chief prosecutor in the case, and among the culprits whom she ensured were given lengthy prison terms were Ndambi Guebuza, the oldest son of former president Armando Guebuza, the general director of the intelligence and security service (SISE) under Guebuza, Gregorio Leao, and the SISE director of economic intelligence, Antonio Carlos do Rosario.
Marrengula has been a prosecutor for 17 years and, until her current promotion, she was an assistant Attorney-General.
Swearing Marrengula into office on Tuesday, Buchili said she should continue the work of structuring the recently created GCRA, in order to ensure the recovery of stolen assets, and forcing criminals to compensate the Mozambican state.
In the near future, the GCRA should set up regional offices, and provincial focal points, said Buchili, which can investigate the ownership of assets.
