Nova Democracia in alliance with Zuma?

Africa-Press – Mozambique. The Mozambican political party Nova Democracia (ND – New Democracy) has formed an alliance with the South African party Umkhonto we Sizwe, led by disgraced former President Jacob Zuma, according to a report on the independent television station, TV Sucesso.

Few details about this supposed alliance are yet known. When TV Sucesso contacted the leader of ND, Salomao Muchanga and asked for details about his arrangement with Zuma, he merely said “this is an action which seeks to liberate Africa”.

Some kind of arrangement seems to exist, since photos of Muchanga and Zuma smiling and shaking hands have circulated on social media

In last year’s municipal elections, ND made a strong showing in just one municipality, Gurue, in the central province of Zambezia, where it came second, behind the ruling Frelimo Party.

The ND, however, says this result is fraudulent and that, in reality, it won a majority on the Gurue municipal assembly.

Zuma has faced repeated corruption charges, but has avoided a prison sentence. He founded the Umkhonto we Sizwe political party in December 2023, much to the anger of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), since Umkhonto we Sizwe was also the name of the ANC’s military wing during the struggle against apartheid.

Zuma said he would remain a member of the ANC, but would not vote for it. This led to his suspension from ANC membership.
