Africa-Press – Mozambique. The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, arrived early on Sunday night in New York , United States of America, where he will participate, this Monday and Tuesday, in the 78th Ordinary Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
At the event, Heads of State and Government and world leaders will debate and make commitments to better address the challenges the world faces in terms of international peace and security and economic and social development.
President Nyusi is scheduled to address the UNGA in the afternoon session on Tuesday.
Brazil’s President Luiz da Silva will be the first world leader to present his address to the 78th session as is tradition, followed by the U.S. President Joe Biden, the traditional second speaker, being the host country
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the 10th speaker, will be the first African leader to speak in the morning session of the assembly.. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune will be the first African leader to speak at the afternoon session, followed by the Moroccan leader, Aziz Akhannouch. President Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique and President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria. Senegal’s President Macky Sall will be the fifth African speaker to address the gathering and the last leader on the first day.
On the sidelines of the general debate of the UN General Assembly, the Mozambican Head of State is scheduled to participate in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG Summit – 18-19 September) on , the Climate Ambition Summit (20 September) ,as well as holding bilateral meetings with other Member States of the multilateral organization.
At the UNGA which will bring together more than 150 Heads of State and governments, UN member countries will have the opportunity to discuss the steps to be taken to materialize the 2030 agenda.
For Mozambique’s ambassador to the UN, the meeting is seen as a crucial step to boost global action and ensure that the Sustainable Development Goals are more than mere aspirations, becoming a tangible reality.
In the session, Mozambique will share its experience and challenges in achieving these goals which, in Pedro Comissário’s opinion, the country has taken considerable steps in implementing.
“There has always been a congruence and convergence between our national agenda, focused on peace, development and democracy, and the Sustainable Development Goals agenda. And that is why Mozambique is a reference” – said Comissário.
And because the world recognizes the advances made by Mozambique, President Filipe Nyusi was invited to co-chair a forum that brings together 27 Heads of State and government with the aim of finding solutions for unity and solidarity in the world, in implementing the SDGs.

According to Pedro Commisário, from the beginning, developing countries have argued that it is not possible to leverage all seven sustainable development goals without international cooperation, without the provision of financial and material resources to less capable countries.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the First Lady of the Republic, Isaura Nyusi, will be decorated, in New York, by the Civil Society Organization, Dream Up, Speak Up Stand Up (DUSUSU).
Isaura Nyusi’s award comes in recognition of the work carried out by her office, defending girls’ rights in Mozambique.
