Africa-Press – Mozambique. More than 22,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) have returned to their communities in the administrative posts of Mucojo and Chai in Macomia district, one of the targets of rebel attacks in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, the local administrator said on Friday.
“The environment in the administrative post of Mucojo and Chai is good. The population is moving around, producing, the security situation is under control,” Macomia district administrator Tomás Badai told the press.
According to Badai, in addition to the more than 22,000 people who returned to the Mucojo and Chai administrative posts, Macomia district also saw the return of displaced people from other villages, “thanks to the effort and work carried out by our forces – the Local Force, the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces and the Rwandan force”.
Tomás Badai explained that, with the reestablishment of security in Macomia, the population is engaged in productive activities.
“The population is calm,” he stressed.
Gas-rich Cabo Delgado has, since October 2017, been facing an armed rebellion, with more than a million people being displaced by attacks claimed by groups associated with the Islamic State.
In 2024 alone, at least 349 people died in attacks by Islamic extremist groups in the province, an increase of 36% compared to the previous year, according to data recently released by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, an academic institution of the US Department of Defense that analyses conflicts in Africa.
