Africa-Press – Mozambique. A group of youths has been disrupting vehicle circulation on Avenida Marginal, near the Mercado do Frango and the Magumba area, in Costa do Sol, Maputo city. The situation, according to the Municipal Police, is a concern for road users, who report traffic blockages and robberies.
By the evening, the avenue takes on a dynamic unlike any seen before. Footage shows youths moving between cars, while others block the road, dance in the middle of it, and some even rob motorists.
Some residents say they feel unsafe, particularly at night, and call for a more regular police presence to ensure peace of mind.
The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) were on site to restore order and calm tensions, but the police intervention was contested, as shown in videos circulating on social media.
Later, the police force presented a few detainees to the press, who all denied any involvement.
The police said that officers had been deployed to the area and succeeded in detaining individuals allegedly linked to the group.
A car park belonging to the Maputo Municipal Council, located in the same area [Avenida Marginal, Costa do Sol], has been used as an open-air nightclub.
Naftal Lay, spokesperson for the Municipal Police, is quoted by Miramar as stating that the institution is working on solutions to better organise the car park and ensure harmonious coexistence, with the possibility of future redevelopment of the car park space.
