Portugal: Flights to/from Mozambique grounded until Jan. 9 – government

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Flights to and from Mozambique will remain suspended until January 9 and passengers from this country are required to perform a Covid-19 test and comply with a 14-day isolation period, the government said Wednesday.

“The obligation to comply with the 14-day quarantine also applies to citizens entering Portugal – by air, land or sea – who have left six other Southern African countries (South Africa, Botswana, Essuatíni, Lesotho, Namibia and Zimbabwe) in the 14 days prior to their arrival in Portugal,” says a statement from the Interior Ministry (MAI) released this morning.

The MAI explains the measures applied to air traffic that came into force at midnight, when mainland Portugal entered a situation of calamity due to the increase in the number of cases of Covid-19, a level that will remain until March 20, 2022.

It said that essential and non-essential travel continues to be allowed for passengers from EU member states and Schengen area countries, Brazil, the US, the UK and countries and regions whose epidemiological situation is in line with a recommendation of the EU, whose list now includes Indonesia and from which Jordan, Namibia, Singapore and Ukraine are departing.

From the remaining countries, non-essential travel is also permitted for vaccinated or recovered passengers. Otherwise, only essential journeys are allowed, namely those intended to allow citizens to transit or enter Portugal for professional, study, family reunion, health or humanitarian reasons.

Airlines will only allow passengers to or from mainland Portugal to board flights with negative test results on departure and may incur a fine of 20,000 to 40,000 euros per passenger and the passenger may incur a fine of 300 to 800 euros for failing to observe this.

These measures are in force between today (Wednesday) and 23h59 of 09 January 2022.
