Africa-Press – Mozambique. Portugal’s government has congratulated the election of the five new non-permanent member states of the United Nations (UN) Security Council for the 2023-2024 biennium, highlighting the presence of Mozambique.
“Portugal congratulates the five new non-permanent members of the Security Council – Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland – for the 2023-2024 biennium, recognising the importance of the presence of a Portuguese-speaking country in this important UN body,” the Portuguese foreign ministry wrote on Twitter.
The UN Security Council comprises 15 members, five permanent and 10 non-permanent.
The election took place today at the UN headquarters in New York.
On Thursday, the Mozambican minister of foreign affairs and cooperation expressed confidence in his country’s election to the UN Security Council, saying that the experience in the fight against terrorism would be an “advantage” in its favour.
The five member states – Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland – competed for the five available seats. Mozambique and Switzerland were among 62 UN member states – 31.9% of the total membership – that have never served on the Council.
Mozambique ran for the only seat available to the African group.
Verónica Macamo said that in her country’s favour was its experience fighting terrorism, particularly in Cabo Delgado.
The Mozambican province is rich in natural gas but has been terrorised since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
