Africa-Press – Mozambique. The President of the Republic, Daniel Francisco Chapo, on Tuesday held a meeting with the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique (CEM), represented by the Archbishop of Maputo, Dom João Carlos Nunes.

After leaving the meeting, the archbishop stated that the meeting with the head of state highlighted the importance of institutional dialogue and addressed central themes such as peace, national reconciliation, inclusive development, and the strengthening of Mozambican youth.

“We came here as the presidency of the Episcopal Conference, representing each of our brother bishops. Therefore, we came on behalf of the conference to greet the highest dignitary of the nation, His Excellency the President, because since he took office, we have never had this opportunity, and today we came to greet him,” Dom João Carlos Nunes said.

During the meeting, the Catholic leaders shared their interpretation of the main challenges facing the country, highlighting the imperative of social healing and strengthening national unity. “We also had the grace to share a little about the country’s situation in general, issues related to peace, reconciliation, and the healing of many wounds, because we need to join hands and walk together so that peace and reconciliation can truly be overcome,” the archbishop added.

Another topic discussed was national development, with an emphasis on social justice and inclusion. “We also spoke a little about the issue of development, ensuring that it is sustainable, but also encompasses all people, not exclusive, meaning that it has some outsiders,” he emphasized.

The Archbishop of Maputo also announced the 3rd Jornadas da Juventude (National Youth Day, a Catholic church event that will bring together young people from all over the country from December 8th to 13th in the city of Maputo. The event will bring together young Catholics from the 12 dioceses and beyond, as well as other young people who wish to participate, he explained.

Dom João Carlos Nunes noted that the meeting also served to raise awareness among the head of state about the fundamental role of Mozambican youth in building a future based on moral and ethical values. “It’s also a time to implement everything we want: youth, which is the future and present of the country, to inspire the ethical values, morals, and well-being that we all need. They are a very positive youth, and this also involves these meetings.”

The archbishop concluded by revealing that the President of the Republic was touched by the topics presented and pledged his support for the youth event. “His Excellency, the President of the Republic, was indeed very pleased and committed. He truly committed to helping the Church in the continuation of this event, and not only that, he also truly recognized that the problems we brought are government problems and that together we could forge paths that can truly achieve our common goals,” he reported.
