Renamo demands concrete measures against terrorism

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Renamo, the largest opposition party in Mozambique, has demanded concrete measures from the government in order to put an end to the extreme violence carried out by islamist terrorists in some districts of the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

According to the General Secretary of Renamo, Clementina Bomba, who was speaking to reporters on Wednesday, in Maputo, about the country’s current political and military situation, “faced with the scenario of despair and insecurity, we demand concrete measures from the government that will lead to peace.”

“This requires the robustness and logistical equipping of the Defence and Security Forces and, above all, the exploration of channels for dialogue, given that, according to official pronouncements, some of the terrorist leaders are known”, Bomba said.

Bomba believeed that the terrorist actions in Cabo Delgado “are related to the waves of kidnappings that create insecurity in the cities and, above all, within the business class, which has a negative impact on the national economy and scares off investors.”

Bomba also encouraged religious organizations to pray for peace and harmony for an end to the terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado.

“As in other difficult times, we call on religious denominations to intercede for peace and harmony in our homeland”, she said.

According to government figures, the latest wave of attacks by Islamist terrorists in Cabo Delgado has displaced over 60,000 people over the provincial boundary into the neighboring province of Nampula.

In its latest report on Mozambique, the United Nations Refugee Agency says that nearly a million people have fled their homes over the last five years in Cabo Delgado as a result of the violence.
