Africa-Press – Mozambique. After an outstanding individual season in which Liverpool easily won their second Premier League title, Mohamed Salah was awarded the Premier League player of the season on Saturday.
Ryan Gravenberch, a teammate, was named the young player of the season.
Salah helped the Anfield team win the championship with four games remaining by scoring 28 goals and dishing out 18 assists.
Salah became just the sixth player to win the accolade twice, following in the footsteps of Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic, and Kevin De Bruyne, after earning it in 2017–18 as well.
As the season enters its last day on Sunday, the 32-year-old Egyptian is five goals ahead of Alexander Isak of Newcastle United and is on track to win another Golden Boot for most goals in a season.
When Liverpool hosts Crystal Palace at Anfield, Salah might even surpass the record of 47 goals scored by Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole, who both accomplished the feat in a 42-game season.
No player has ever had 46 goal involvements in a 38-game season.
Salah may become the first football player to win the Golden Boot, Golden Playmaker, and Player of the Season accolades if he records six more assists than any other player.
Earlier this month, Salah also took home the Football Writers’ Association men’s player of the year award for the third time.
Under Slot, who used the Dutchman as a deep-lying midfielder, Gravenberch was one of the first names on the team sheet.
With 36 appearances this season, the 23-year-old has established himself as an essential member of Liverpool’s spine.
This season, his versatility in protecting Liverpool’s back line has been highlighted, and his ability to launch assaults fast, block passing lanes and regain possession has made him invaluable.
Gravenberch had 59 interceptions this season, more than any other midfield player.
Gravenberch and Virgil Van Dijk, the three Liverpool players who have played the most minutes for the squad this season, were also nominated for Player of the Season.
Additionally, Trent Alexander-Arnold won the youngsters’ award in 2019–20, the season it was first given out, making him the second Liverpool player to do so.
