Africa-Press – Mozambique. A group of Islamist terrorists on Tuesday attacked a base of the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM), in Macomia district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, causing an as yet unspecified number of casualties.
Military sources and residents of Macomia town, cited by the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, claim that the attack was against Katupa base, located a few kilometers from the 5th Congress village, in the Chai administrative post, not far from National Road Number 380.
“We heard that there had been an attack, and some soldiers arrived here exhausted. On arrival, they said they had been attacked by the enemy”, a source said.
According to another military source, “I received information about the attack from a friend who is in Macomia. He told me that our colleagues were attacked in Katupa and that some of them fled.”
In connection with the raid, photos attached to a publication by the pro-terrorist Amaq News agency reporting the attack are already circulating. In the publication, the terrorists claim that at least 10 members of the Mozambican army were killed and others injured. They also claim to have captured various military equipment.
This is the second attack in less than a month against the military forces fighting terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
These attacks take place at a moment when the French oil and gas company, Total Energies, which heads the Mozambique LNG Project, located on the Afungi peninsula, in Palma district, has announced that the company will seek the government’s approval to lift the declaration of force majeure in order to resume its operations.
The LNG (liquefied natural gas) project, which is budgeted at around 20 billion US dollars, has been covered by force majeure since 2021, following a major terrorist attack against Palma town.
