Africa-Press – Mozambique. After a recent government reshuffle, Mozambique joins “a group of only 14 countries that have achieved gender parity at this [Council of Ministers] level,” the UN has stated.
The personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Mozambique and the UN Resident Coordinator, in a statement released this Saturday (26-03), praised the Mozambican government for achieving gender parity in the Council of Ministers for the first time.
The number of men and women reached equilibrium after President Filipe Nyusi’s March reshuffle. There are now 11 women and 11 men – including the prime minister – holding ministerial posts in the Mozambican government.
“Achieving gender parity in the Council of Ministers is a historic milestone,” said the UN, adding that it is “a reflection of the broader work to promote equality” and the emancipation of women.
Globally, only a fifth of ministerial positions are held by women, underlined Mirko Manzoni, personal representative of António Guterres, and Myrta Kaulard, resident coordinator.
Mozambique joins “a group of only 14 countries that have achieved gender parity at this level and is the third country in Africa to have 50% or more women in ministerial positions”.
The two officials also recall that Filipe Nyusi promised gender parity on Mozambican Women’s Day in 2021, a holiday celebrated on April 7.
