Oshakati Hospital records 29 malaria cases

Africa-Press – Namibia. MORE instances of malaria are being reported at Oshakati Hospital as a result of the north’s severe health issues brought on by the current, ongoing rains.

The Oshakati Intermediate Hospital has already recorded 29 cases in December 2023 compared to four cases reported during the same period in 2022, according to the Medical Superintendent Dr. Ruben Kanime.

Of those cases, 22 were tested at our hospital, and 7 were referred from District Hospitals.

According to Kanime, 3% of that number came from Angola.

“While the ministry has activated specific interventions to curb the spread of malaria, such as indoor residual spraying (IRS), communities are urged to promote community-based environmental management practices to reduce mosquito breeding sites, such as draining stagnant water, proper waste disposal, and habit modification,” he said.

He added that people should, at all times, practice personal protective measures by using bed nets, insect repellents, long-sleeve clothing to minimize skin exposure, and close windows and doors to minimize access to sleeping rooms.
