Pharmaceutical giant Fabupharm has been ordered to recall all oral liquid products and suspend manufacturing on the affected production line.
The order, which is effective immediately, will stand until Fabupharm fully complies with pharmaceutical safety standards.
The move by the Namibia Medicines Regulatory Council (NMRC) on Monday is aimed at protecting the public.
A document signed off by the NMRC Registrar Fransina Nambahu, indicates the directive follows a routine Good ManufacturingPractices(GMP) inspection, during which serious deficiencies were identified in the company’s oral liquid dosage facility.
“The inspection uncovered violations requiring urgent corrective and preventative measures to address lapses in quality and safety protocols,” Nambahu is quoted in the missive.
She goes on to say, the NMRC remains unwavering in its mandate to ensure that only safe, effective, and quality-assured medicines reach the Namibian public. She added: “Further information on the council’s actions and ongoing oversight will be communicated in due course.”
No compromise
In no uncertain terms, the NMRC’s enforcement has drawn praise from Affirmative Repositioning leader and parliamentarian Job Amupanda, who first brought the matter to public light.
For the past few weeks, Amupanda has been demanding accountability over Fabupharm’s products.
“I welcome the implementation of the instructions I issued to the minister and the NMRC regarding Fabupharm,” Amupanda said. “No one should gamble with the health of our people, especially our children.”
In an interview with New Era yesterday, Amupanda called for tougher regulatory enforcement, emphasising the critical importance of strict quality control in pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution.
“This action must send a clear message: public health is non-negotiable. We cannot tolerate negligence in the supply of medicines. The lives of our people come first,” Amupanda said.
The recall, he said, serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of non-compliance and reaffirms the NMRC’s commitment to swift, uncompromising intervention in the face of health risks.
