Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Minister of Education, Sanet Steenkamp, has called for the transparent and speedy appointment of teachers, warning that corruption in the process will not be tolerated.
“Let me address an issue of national concern. The appointment of teachers must be transparent, timely, and merit-based. Delays, unnecessary bureaucracy, and manipulation of processes harm learners, families, and unemployed graduates. Allegations circulating among unemployed teachers regarding the selling of positions, favouritism, or undue influence are deeply troubling,” she said.
The minister made these remarks during the ministry’s recent annual staff address, during which she emphasised that the government has zero tolerance for corruption in appointments.
“Let me be clear: any official involved in the solicitation or acceptance of money, favours, or influence in appointments is committing serious misconduct and a criminal act. These practices, if proven, will result in disciplinary action, dismissal, and referral to law-enforcement authorities,” Steenkamp warned.
She also addressed regional leadership, instructing them to ensure that appointment processes are properly documented and auditable. She urged regional leaders to communicate clearly and to act swiftly on complaints related to corrupt practices.
“Public office is not a personal entitlement; it is a public trust. Unethical conduct, whether in offices, regions, or SOEs, erodes confidence and undermines our mission. This includes: abuse of authority, poor treatment of colleagues or members of the public, misuse of public resources, failure to perform assigned duties,” Steenkamp added.
