Africa-Press – Namibia. THE All People’s Party (APP) will have to go back to the drawing board to discuss whether the party will continue its battle with the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) over the outcome of election results in the Ndonga Linena constituency.
This comes after the party’s president, the late Ignatius Shixwameni, was expected to meet with party leadership to talk about the way forward regarding the issue.
The 55-year-old Shixwameni collapsed and died while attending a meeting at parliament on Wednesday. The ECN at a media briefing on Thursday observed a moment of silence in remembrance of Shixwameni.
According to ECN chairperson Elsie Nghikembua, the commission learnt with sadness about his death. “On behalf of the commission, I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Shixwameni, the All People’s Party and the entire Namibian nation,” she said.
Right until his death, Shixwameni was in a dispute with the ECN, challenging the commission over the Ndonga Linena constituency election results of 27 November 2020. He had then called for ECN CEO Theo Mujoro and his senior managers to quit.
The APP earlier this year took the ECN to court on the basis that it should have gained 40 of the 57 rejected ballots announced on 27 November 2020 for the Ndonga Linena election results.
However, the recount results were in favour of the Swapo party that emerged victorious. A member of the APP has indicated the party will meet to discuss whether the dispute with the ECN will continue.
