Army gets new commander

Africa-Press – Namibia. Major general Aktofel Nambahu has taken over as the commander of the Namibian Defence Force, with effect from Thursday.

He takes over from retired major general Matheus Alueendo. Alueendo handed over the reins to Nambahu on Thursday at the Lieutenant General Dimo Hamaambo Garrison parade ground at Grootfontein.

Alueendo has been with the army since its establishment in 1990, serving as the army commander since 2019.

“To all rank and file of the Namibian army, I am grateful that I have enjoyed a wonderful journey of serving among you during my tenure as army commander,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, Nambahu pledged to focus on training to ensure the alignment of all staff to the vision and mission of the army and “in a way we are intended to fight the war”.

He added that he will also strive to look after the welfare of the staff to ensure positive morale among the troops.

Other promotions

Colonel David Diyeve has been promoted to brigadier general and appointed deputy army commander. He takes over from retired brigadier general Ambrosius Kwedhi.

Colonel Rehabiam Kalimba has been promoted to brigadier general and appointed deputy chief of staff: joint operations.

Colonel Natanael Ngolo has been promoted to brigadier general and appointed chief of staff: defence intelligence.

Group captain Andima Iyambo is now the air commodore and appointed commander of air operations.

Eleven senior officers have also been promoted to the rank of colonel.
