Ballotti proposes upgrades to Windhoek sports facilities and centres

Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Dino Ballotti, has put forward plans to restore Khomasdal Stadium, upgrade the Goreangab Soccer Field into a sports stadium, and revitalise the Katutura Multi-Purpose Centre.

These proposals were outlined during Ballotti’s recent engagement with Khomas Regional Governor, Sam Safishuna Nujoma, and senior officials from the City of Windhoek. The meeting served as a familiarisation visit to various sports facilities in Windhoek, including the Goreangab Soccer Field, Khomasdal Stadium, and the Katutura Youth Complex.

At the meeting, Ballotti suggested transforming the Goreangab Soccer Field—currently owned by the City of Windhoek—into a modern sports stadium. The City of Windhoek stated that it would collaborate with the ministry to determine the next steps, including the transfer of land rights and the use of existing technical drawings to advance the project.

Ballotti also raised concerns about the current state of Khomasdal Stadium, which is occupied by approximately 27 homeless individuals who were relocated there during the Covid-19 pandemic. Ballotti expressed a desire to see the stadium restored to its original purpose.

“I look forward to seeing Premier League matches return to Khomasdal Stadium,” he said.

Ballotti also expressed his interest in reviving the Katutura Multi-Purpose Centre, which has become a shelter for around 299 homeless people who have taken over the dormitories intended for youth and the sports field. The Deputy Minister stated that the ministry intends to transform the centre into a vibrant, multi-functional space that once again serves the youth.
