Namibia and Botswana have reaffirmed their long-standing friendship during the Bi-National Commission’s (BNC) Ministerial Segment yesterday, at the Hilton Hotel in Windhoek.

The meeting, which was co-chaired by Dr. Phenyo Butale, the Minister of International Relations for Botswana, and Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, the Minister of International Relations and Trade for Namibia, brought together different ministers and seniors officials from both countries to deliberate on strengthening bilateral collaboration in the political, economic, and social spheres.

Some of the major achievements are the establishment of 24-hour border operations, the creation of a one-stop border post, and the usage of national identity cards for cross-border travel. She claimed that these actions show a common commitment to promoting regional integration and increasing the effectiveness of cross-border cooperation for both nations’ citizens.

Ashipala-Musavyi stated that, “the accomplishments highlight the significance of our binational commission as a forum for organised discourse, reciprocal accountability, and cooperative advancement.”

She urged delegates to find creative ways to collaborate in sectors like commerce, energy, agriculture, infrastructure, education, science and technology, food, and culture. She also emphasised initiatives to support economic diversification, industrialisation, job creation, and youth empowerment.

She added that defence and security cooperation is equally important since it guarantees regional peace and stability, which are prerequisites for sustained growth.

Butale commended the two countries’ fraternal ties, which are based on respect for one another, excellent governance, non-violence, and the rule of law. He also underlined that Namibia and Botswana’s collaboration strengthens regional solidarity and shared ideals while providing tangible advancements and useful suggestions to direct the next stage of bilateral interaction. He added that he was looking forward to Gaborone, Botswana, hosting the next BNC session.

The two ministers also discussed how African countries might play a larger role in solving global issues. Minister Ashipala-Musavyi emphasised Namibia and Botswana’s dedication to continental and regional projects, such as the African Continental Free commercial Area (AfCFTA), which offers chances for free movement of products and services, standardisation, and commercial expansion. The ministers underlined their commitment to fostering multilateralism through UN reforms, urging an end to sanctions, and assisting peace and stability in conflict areas.

Minister Ashipala-Musavyi concluded by expressing hope that the discussions would fortify the two countries’ voice of friendship and unity while yielding useful results that directly enhance the lives of their residents.

She underlined that as neighbours, friends, and partners, Namibia and Botswana are dedicated to achieving prosperity, peace, and advancement together, serving as a model of good neighbourliness and cross-border collaboration throughout Southern Africa and throughout Africa.

Senior officials have been working since Monday to analyse progress, suggest new areas of collaboration, and lay the foundation for the ministerial meetings.
