EU Film Festival deeply moves

Africa-Press – Namibia. THE delegation of the European Union (EU) to Namibia’s recently launched European Union Film Festival is going strong as they head into their fourth week of showcasing award-winning international films.

This is the fourth time this festival is held in Namibia. This year’s theme is ‘Life is About Laughter, Sadness, Joy, Wonders, and Timeless Stories’. The EU Film Festival is organised by EU member states, the Goethe Institut in Namibia, and the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre in collaboration with the Namibia Film Commission, the Film Association of Namibia, and local film producers.

At the festival’s launch on 6 October, the Croatian movie ‘The Constitution’ was shown at the Village Opera House in Windhoek. The 93-minute-long story follows the exploits of Kralj, a middle-aged man struggling with his gender identity, discrimination, and his own prejudice.

He forms an unlikely friendship with someone who teaches him that life isn’t always black and white. “If you really want to understand what the complexity of life and love is, ‘The Constitution’ is what it is,” screenwriter and singer Michael Pulse said after the viewing, adding it was the type of film he was interested in writing.

A total of nine movies will be screened every Wednesday until 1 December, with three of them being Namibian productions. Other films on the line-up have been ‘Our Struggles’ (a French film by Guillaume Senez) and German movie ‘Lessons of a Dream’ by Sebastian Grobler, while ‘Aurora’, a Finnish film by Miia Tervo, will be the fourth screening tonight.

It is the story of love, friendship, and redemption. The films screened so far have been impressively thought-provoking, with timeless stories and depth.

Getting a peek into completely different cultures is not only interesting, but also provides an understanding of the similarities we share as humans – no matter where in the world we are.

By attending screenings you may just witness a story you never thought you would. – Anne Hambuda is a poet, writer and social commentator from Windhoek, Namibia. Follow her online for more.
