Africa-Press – Namibia. THE first-ever FNB-NBF 5on5 has officially kicked off in the Oshana region on Friday, with 11 regions participating in the hopes of selecting a national team to represent the country during international games.

The tournament, which began on Friday, will conclude on Saturday at the Caribbean and Ongwediva Basketball court.

First National Bank (FNB), as the main sponsor, has made a sponsorship commitment of N$900,000 for the next three years, with an annual amount of N$300,000.

“It is our hope that the partnership between FNB and Namibia Basketball Federation will help develop players from the grassroots level to having them represent Namibia on a national and international stage as they pursue their dreams,” says Cornelia Paulus, FNB Ondangwa Branch Manager.

Paulus stressed that the establishment of their partnership is a crucial step toward achieving Namibia’s excellence in basketball and providing the players with the support they deserve as representatives on the national and international stage.

Meanwhile, Oshana Governor Elia Irimar said that basketball is more than just a game; it is a platform for fostering teamwork, discipline, and determination.

Irimari made these remarks during the launch and kick-off of the games at the Caribbean recreation park on Friday, stating that basketball teaches people the value of hard work and perseverance.

“Through this tournament, we have the opportunity to witness the immense talent and skill that our local basketball players possess,” he said.

He added that the FNB-NBF 5on5 basketball tournament will not only provide a platform for players to showcase their abilities but also inspire the younger generation to pursue their passion for sports.

Irimari indicated that by encouraging participation in sports, they can instill in their youth the values of dedication, fair play, and sportsmanship.

Further, Irimari emphasized his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sports development and youth empowerment.
