Africa-Press – Namibia. Minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security Lucia Iipumbu on Thursday visited the Hardap Correctional Facility to reaffirm the ministry’s ongoing support to grieving staff who lost their colleagues in a fatal crash outside Mariental two months ago.
On 30 August, a head-on collision took place between a Namibian Correctional Service vehicle, which was transporting employees to work, and a Namibian Police Force vehicle which was transporting two civilians to a Mariental hospital on the B1 road.
The crash claimed the lives of 12 correctional officers, two police officers and two civilians. Iipumbu said the main purpose of the visit to the Hardap Correctional Facility was to see how the grieving staff were coping and to reaffirm the ministry’s continued support.
“The main reason why we came here is to touch base with the Namibian Correctional Service officers who lost their colleagues two months ago in a fatal crash. We have deployed psychological support to the colleagues which has been withdrawn and just wanted to see how they are copying… We will keep giving them moral support,” said Iipumbu.
She offered words of encouragement to the correctional staff. “We are carrying you in our hearts and prayers while hoping that it gives you strength to cope with this great loss,” said Iipumbu.
After the engagement, Iipumbu and the staff toured the correctional facility to assess the various projects being undertaken there, including the construction of a warehouse, the agricultural site and the piggery. She also visited the families of the two civilians who lost their lives in the accident.
